The Book of Jonah

A  Jonah is called to go to Nineveh (1:1-3)
- "Arise, go to Nineveh, the great city…and Jonah arose to flee.”

B  Jonah and the unsaved sailors(1:4-16)
- God threatens judgment on the pagan ship
- Sailors respond immediately and cry out to Jonah’s God for mercy.
- God spares the contrite pagans of the ship

C  Jonah’s grateful and beautiful prayer (1:17—2:10)
- He boasts of God’s love and is grateful that his life and soul are spared

A’   Jonah re-commissioned to go to Nineveh (3:1-3a)
- “Arise, go to Nineveh, the great city…and Jonah arose to flee.”

B’  Jonah and the unsaved Ninevites (3:3b-10)
- God threatens judgment against the pagan city
- Ninevites respond immediately and cry out to Jonah’s God for mercy.
- God spares the contrite pagans of the city

C’  Jonah’s resentful prayer (4:1-4)
- He complains of God’s love and wishes that his life and soul are taken

D  CLIMAX: Yahweh’s lesson for Jonah (4:5-11). So who is really Nineveh in the narrative?
