Literary Outline of Joshua 1-12 (5-7 years)
A Introduction (1:1-18). Nobody will be able to oppose Joshua.
B Rahab (Canaanite) is spared from among the Gibeonites (2:1-24).
C The “stopping” (amad) of the Jordan River (3—4)
D Ceremony at Gilgal (5), “to roll away.”
E Defeat of Jericho (6—8:29). Conquest and burning of the city. The city of Ai is put to death. Achan, an Israelite, takes plunder and is put to death.
F Conclusion (8:30-35). Victory.
A’ Introduction (9:1-2). Everyone opposes Joshua.
B’ Gibeonites (Canaanites) are spared (9:3-27).
C’ The “stopping” (amad) of the sun (10:1-15).
D’ Ceremony at Makkedah (10:16-31). The stone rolled (gal).
E’ Defeat of Hazor (11). Conquest and burning of the city. Israelites take plunder. The Gibeonites are put to death.
F’ Conclusion (12). Victory over the kings.
